I love the end of daylight saving time. One whole hour extra of sleep. Fantastic.
A friend of mine got her Ph.D on friday. Not something that's in my future. I'm stuggeling with motivation to even finnish my masters. But it's only one more year... Only....
She did really good though. It was interesting to watch her defend her dissertation. Never been to one before. But the best part was the party after. Loads of food and wine. It was kind of strange to have a party in the classroom though. But they made it really nice.
Saturday I was at a friends birthdayparty. Party hard! We played Trivial Pursuit... No, but it was really nice. But my god how little I know. All the stuff we learned in school. Gone. I am particulary bad at history. It's really embarrassing. I need to read more. "Damn TV! It ruined my imagination and my ability to um well uh...you know"
It was a combined birthday/Halloween party. I really don't like halloween. Why in the world did we have to import this tradition. Well, obviously it's a money thing. Every year more and more halloween things are entering the stores.. And of course, it's a good excuse to throw a party. I think the first time I noticed people started to "do" halloween here was in 98 - I think. So it's only been in the last few years. And I don't think the trick or treat part of it has reached Norway yet. We do the trick or treat thing between christmas and new years. I only did that once when I was a kid. And it was really cold..

more Spacey

Ok, so these are all the Spacey movies I've managed to see so far.
I suck at writing rewievs, so I'll reduce it to a word, or maybe a whole sentence..Wrote down some of my favourite quotes instead
Love:
American Beauty -absolutely beautiful
"It's OK, I wouldn't remember me either."
"1970 Pontiac Firebird. The car I've always wanted and now I have it. I rule! "
"Smile! You're at Mr. Smiley's. "
L.A. Confidential -brilliant, a wonderful cast and it has the best death scene ever
"Oh, great. You get the girl, I get the coroner. "
"Don't start trying to do the right thing boy'o, you haven't got the practice."
The Usual Suspects -excellent, notice something new everytime I watch it
"Hand me the keys, you fucking cocksucker."
"So who the goddamned piss-hell stole the fuckin' truck? "
"And like that... he's gone. "
K-Pax -I know it's not the greatest movie, but I just love it to pieces
"You know, for an educated person Mark, you repeat things quite a bit. Are you aware of that? "
"Now if you'll excuse me, I have a beam of light to catch. "

Really like:
The Shipping News -Lovley, wonderful cast
"I’m not a water person."
"Up here, forget everything you thought you knew about the weather!"

Se7en - sick, twisted and wonderful
Mi
lls: What do you got?
Somerset : Dead dog.
John Doe : I didn't do that.
"Somebody, call somebody."
"Oh. He didn't know."
A Bug's Life -Funny. I'd pay a lot of money to watch the tape of Spacey recording the last scene.
"I'm a beautiful butterfly!"
"OVER HERE. I'M THE ONLY STICK WITH EYEBALLS."
"This is the fifteenth take. I can not work like this. I will be in my trailer."

Enjoy:
The Life of David Gale -
the scenes with Linney and Spacey together are great
"Socrates was ugly, Plato was fat, and, um, and Aristotle was a prissy dresser!"
"73% of all serial killers vote Republican"
"You fondle your friend’s garbage bags?"
Looking for Richard -very enjoyable cliff notes on Richard III
"We're getting forty dollars a day and all the donuts we can eat on this project."
"I'm confused just saying it to you, so I can imagine how you must feel hearing me talk. It's very confusing. I don't know why we even bother doing this at all."
The Ref -silly, hilarious christmas movie, but why all the drunk santa scenes?
"To be what? Somebody who takes photographs of lutefisk to prove the nothingness of being"
"Humans have feelings. Didn't your alien leaders TELL you that before they SENT you here?"

Swimming with Sharks -has lot's of flaws, but it's very entertaining. Spacey is terrific
"You're happy. I hate that!"
"You are nothing! If you were in my toilet I wouldn't bother flushing it. My bathmat means more to me than you!"
Glengarry Glen Ross -brilliant actors get to show how good they are
"Will you go to lunch? Go to lunch. WILL you GO to LUNCH? "
"You stupid fucking cunt. Hey, Williamson, I'm talking to you, shithead. You just cost me $6,000. Six thousand dollars, and one Cadillac. That's right. What are you going to do about it? What are you going to do about it, asshole? You're fucking shit. Where did you learn your trade, you stupid fucking cunt, you idiot? Who ever told you that you could work with men? "
The United States of Leland -Interesting, great acting, Jena Malone is terrific, but I can't stand Lena Olins accent..
Lady: Excuse me. I'm sorry if I'm bothering you. But aren't you an actor
A.Fitzgerald: Aren't we all dear
Lady: No no no I mean a famous actor. You know, a movie star actor. I know you face
A.Fitzgerald: I was in Stanley Cubricks musical, the one about the alcoholic pirates. I played Captain Morgan

OK:
Hurlyburly -blablabla, but enjoyable blablabla
"No, I know what I'm saying. I don't know what I mean, but I know what I'm saying. Is that what you mean?"
"I am my own biggest distraction."
The Negotiator -too long, but the scenes between Spacey and Jackson are great. And of course- J.T. Walsh - brilliant
"I once talked a guy out of blowing up the Sears Tower but I can't talk my wife out of the bedroom or my kid off the phone. "
"Why d'you always pick on me? I mean, who am I, Charlie Brown? "
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil -facinated by that part of USA, is it really voodo country down there? Spaceys eyes seems pitch black in this one. I need a bigger tv..
"This place is fantastic; it's like "Gone With The Wind" on mescaline. I, I know your my agent. Listen to me. They walk imaginary pets here, Garland---on a fucking leash. Alright? And they're all heavily armed and drunk. New York is boring"
"Livin' here pisses off all the right people. "
The Big Kahuna -blablabla....blablabla.. Jesus... Lubricant...blablabla. Great acting though.
"Did you mention perhaps, what line of industrial lubricants Jesus would have endorsed?"
"Sorry, the carrot stick’s gone to my head."

A Time to Kill -your typical 'Grisham novel made into a movie'.
Rocket Gibraltar - let's set gradpa on fire... I woudn't trust 10 year olds to decide whether or not a person is dead... But it was a sweet little movie.
"Nothing's as good as a midnight pee in the ocean"
"They're going to put tomatoes on yo-yos so they can hit me twice."

Austin Powers in Goldmember -just not a big fan of these movies, although they are funny at times.
"Hey you assholes. I'm Mini-Me."

Don’t like:
Pay it Forward - cry goddammit! Cry I say!
Arlene : Jesus, you are really somethin'.
Eugene : Thanks. I appreciate the euphemism. I always wanted to be somethin'.

Outbreak -notice how, in the simulation, the virus didn't cross the mexican or canadian borders?
"It’s an adverb. It’s a lazy tool of a weak mind."
Doomsday Gun
-interesting story told in an unbelivable boring way
Duvall: You want some gatorade?
Price: No thanks, I've sworn off
Duvall: Is that a joke? I don't like jokes. I don't understand them
Ordinary Decent Criminal -enjoyable at times, but very forgettable - can't remember much of it..
Iron Will -maybe when I was 10..
"Holy Chicago!"
Consenting Adults -could have been interesting, but it's not

Henry & June - Incredible boring. What am I missing, why are so many people loving this movie?

See No Evil, Hear No Evil - well if you like Wilder and Pryor movies. I don't. It's so 80s, so silly, and what is that thing on spacey's face?

Cell phones

Me and cell phones are not compatible. I had to talk a lot on it yesterday, and now I have this throbbing headache. My brain feels like it's going to pop out of my head. (Definitely going to buy a hands free kit now.)
I've never had it this bad before. I usually can't speak on the phone for more than a few minutes before I start to get a headache and my ear get all warm and tingly. But it usually goes away shortly after.
Maybe I should go see a doctor. I am way to sensitive to that thing.. Sometimes, if I just have the phone in my pocket, my heart starts racing, I break out into a cold sweat and I start to feel dizzy. There has been a few times when I had to just sit down, and put the phone somewhere away from me.. Staring at a computerscreen was not the smartest thing to do right now..

Finally saw Shrek 2 yesterday. I love Shrek. It's such silly fun. And being a total geek, I love trying to find all the references. But looking at a trivia page for the movie, I realise I've missed A LOT. Maybe I'll have to see it again. I do like the first one better though, but Puss in boots is my favourite character. "Pray for mercy from Puss... in boots."
Saw The Faboulous Baker Boys when I got home this night. Which by the way there was a reference to in Shrek2.. My god, that Jeff Bridges is a beautiful man. He and Michael Madsen could have played brothers in the late 80s, early 90s. They kind of looked a bit alike back then. Yes, that would have been nice..
Enough of that..
Just listened through the october trilogy of Thomas Dybdahl. I absolutely love his latest album, "One day you'll dance for me, New York City". Well I love all three of them. It was quite an ambitious project he started, but he pulled it of so wonderfully. Wonder what direction he's going to move in now that the trilogy is complete.. I hope he stays in the melancholy singer-songwriter corner. Although it would be fun to hear something completely new from him. Hate that I put off buying tickets to his concert, now of course it's sold out. Have to wait until december I guess. Well, maybe i can afford to go see The soundtrack of our lives play then:)

obviously

My little Spacey obsession hasn't ended just yet... I just listened to the directors commentary on The Life of David Gale. It was quite interesting, but my god how many times did Alan Parker say "Obvioulsy".. It was distracting. I found myself waiting for the next one instead of listening to what he actually was saying.. I don't think I've heard people use obviously as a 'filler' ( have no idea what you call these words... ) before. I have a friend who used to say "lissom" at least a few times in every sentence. It was quite annoying, so I commented on it. She had absolutely no idea that she was saying it that often. After I mentioned it, she started to be aware of it, which was kind of funny because every time she realised she'd said it - she would stop talking, let out a little laugh and then start again...She's stopped using it that much now. Didn't mean to embarass her, but it was distracting to listen to. I don't think I use words like that too often. If I do, or start doing it, I hope people will point it out to me.
Anyway, I quite like this movie. The performances were great, and it had some nice little twists that I didn't see coming.
Also like song that is playing during the end credits. Sounds very Sopranos like. And it was funny to see Sookie from Gilmore girls as a goth girl.

The Magnetic Fields

Went to see The Magnetic Fields yesterday. I wasn't too familiar with their music, and I had absolutely no idea of what they looked like. When they started to walk out on stage I thought it was the stagehand or something. And I don't think I was the only one. People didn't stop talking before Claudia Gonson started to talk.. By then they had already been sitting by their instruments for a little while.. Well except for Stephin Merritt who had to go backstage again, because he forgot his little ukulele. No wonder - it's tiny. My friend couldn't stop laughing in the beginning, cause she thought it looked so funny..
They kind of looked like a tiny chamer orchestra - dressed like music students..or an Irish folkband..
It was quite different from what I had expected. (I've only heard them on cd before) It was much more quiet and still than I had imagined it would be.. There was very little movement - on stage and off.. Actually, it was the first seated concert I've been too. Which I enjoyed - cause I didn't have to stand on my toes the whole evening..
There were times where I thought it was beginning to be a bit monotonous. My mind started to wander and I was thinking that I should be home studying for the exam.. But then they played a song I wanted to hear, or pulled out a pez dispenser and discussed the racism in the latest star wars movies.. and it was all good. But I think my friends were bored out of their minds. Only they are too polite to say so.. I did warn them that it was a bit different from the things they listen to..
They played for about 1 1/2 hours I think. Can't remember the set list. But here is a few of the songs they played:
A Chicken With Its Head Cut Off
Come Back From San Fransisco
I Don't Really Love You Anymore
All The Umbrellas In London (one of my favourites)
I Wish I Had An Evil Twin
I Thought You Were My Boyfriend
Reno Dakota (which got the biggest response of the evening)
Papa Was A Rodeo (singalong..)
And they came back for two encores:
Yeah! Oh, Yeah! (Dramatizised by Sthepin and Claudia)
I Die

I really enjoyed the band that opened for them as well. The Real Tuesday Weld. http://stream.qtv.apple.com/qtv/Jazzonline/sixdegrees/video/bath_300.mov
Kind of old swing bandish mixed with new popelectronica.. Brilliant light show during 'Life and Times of the Clarkenwell Kid'

Annoying song on my brain

So I've had this song on my brain forever. Or not really the song - because that's the annoying part. I can only remember part of the melody and a few words... I heard it on a trip I took a while ago. I asked who it was, but.. Fuck. I need to write that stuff down.. All I remember is that it's a guy with a strange artistname, I think. And he's very emotional when he sings. Apparantly he often start to cry, or at least comes close to crying, when he's on stage. And it's just him and a guitar... And for some reason I think of Adam Sandler singing 'Somebody please kill me', well the mellow parts anyway...
And the lyrics.. I tried searching for the lyrics, but it's not that easy when you just remember a few words here and there. And maybe they are not the right words. I might just have made them up because they went with the melody in my head...
It's something.. "sitting here wishing.... wondering why.... feeling like I had to.... too late for crying.... dying... but I'm free..... stay...."
Have to occupy my brain with something else - going to go nuts if not.
Study for my exam which is in 4 days maybe.. Have to read the chapters once at least..
