Dylan Moran

Got my copy of Dylan Moran's Monster DVD. It's sooo funny. He's brilliant - this guy. I wish there had been some extra stuff on it though. Ok, so there are some drawings, and a mock interview.. But some behind the scenes stuff or something.. But the show is brilliant.
"I don't bother drugs myself. You know, I'm at that age now. I don't need to. If I want a rush I just get out of a chair when I don't expect to."
On releasing your potential: "You should stay away from your potential. I mean that is something you should leave absoulutely alone. You'll mess it up. It's potential - leave it. And anyway, it's like your bank balance, you know, you've always have a lot less than you think"
On the song Funk Soul Brother: "I'm not saying it's a bad song, you know, or anything like that. All I'm saying is that you could get, I don't know.. a broom say.. dip it in some brake fluid and... put the other end up my arse and... stick me on a trampoline in a moving lift and I would write a better song on the wall."
On religion: "So I respect all the differences, you know. But I will say that if you believe in any of it you're a moron.... the thing is, to me it is just people talking to their imaginary friend - at length.... I don't mind that, whatever gets you off you know. But some of them are world leaders"
"I'm not a fighter, you know, I'm a bleeder. The best I could hope for would be to drown somebody else in my own blood"

Keep hearing rumors that they are doing a sequel to the Usual Suspect and Se7en.. God, I hope that's not true. Why can't they just leave good movies alone... Speaking of sequels.. The new version of the Band Aid song is not very good. Not that I like the first one either.. It's so stupid.. "There won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time........Feed the world. Do they know it's christmas time at all"... I know it's for a good cause, but couldn't they have made a better, not so cheesy song..

Movies

Just saw Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf? Very good. I saw a norwegian taped theatre performance of that play once. I thought they were pretty good. But by comparing them to Burton and Taylor they were nothing.. But I guess it's not really fair to compare.. I wonder how big a portion of my life I've spent watching movies. I looked at the Imdb top 250.. Well, here's the top 100 - those in bold I've seen. And I have seen some of the others, but I must not have paid much attention, cause I can't remember much of them. Like I know I've seen the two first godfather movies, but I must have been half asleep cause I can't remember them... And considering they are both in the top 5, I guess they should've made an impact.. And also the Star wars series. I have seen them, but I can't remember how they go...which one is which.. Must pay more attention. Otherwise I have to see them again. And spend even more time of my life in front of the tv.. Well not that I mind. I enjoy seeing movies more than once - well some... 2001 A space odessey.. I can't bring myself to sit through the whole thing.. I just don't get it. I think in total I've seen the whole thing.. But that is spread over 4 different attempts...

Wow - how bored am I...

Grease

Went and saw Grease the musical yesterday. It was a company from London who preformed. It was fun. But I could tell that I'm not used to go se shows like that. They had these giant tv-screens next to the stage - and quite often I found myself watching them instead of the stage. And we had really good seats too... Damn tv.. The show was in this pretty big indoor arena type thing. So the sound wasn't always the best. During the big song numbers it was ok, but the talking sounded a bit weird. I didn't much care for the girl who played Sandy either, well her voice I mean. It was really annoying, kind of like an adult who do childrens voices.. And that Vince Fontaine guy was annoying. But I guess he's supposed to be.. The Rizzo girl was very good. Well they all were. I do have a bit of problems with these kinds of big choreographed dance numbers. It looks really silly most of the time. Maybe I'm just jealous becaus I can't dance to save my life. Wow, doesn't sound like I enjoyed it at all - but I did. I mean it's Grease-I'm a girl.. I've seen the film dozens of times probably. I remember I wanted the video for my 10th birthday. But my parents couldn't find it, so the got me Saturday Night Fever instead. Who gives Saturday Night Fever, the uncut version, to a 10 year old?!? I guess they thought, John Travolta, dancing - it will do.. Can't stand dico music, so it wasn't a big hit..
Was supposed to go snowboarding today. But surprise surprise - I overslept. Well, the weather isn't the greatest, so it's fine. It looks as the snow isn't going away anytime soon.

(Big Gulp)
thou shall not partake
of the foods so big
as to challenge the mouth
-Grant-Lee Phillips-

My new favourite word: Floccinaucinihilipilification
(the estimation of something as valueless)
Is the fourt longest word in the english language or something. There's even a song about it..

I can now remove sewage treatment plant from my list of potential places to apply for work after I graduate. Not that I've ever considered it though. My god that place smelled bad. I guess you'll get used to the smell. But I really wouldn't want to get used to it. I was really hungry when we got there. During the lecture before the tour, my stomach woudn't stop growling. But after a few minutes inside the plant, the hunger feeling went away.. Wonder why...
Finally done with the last exam. Think I'm going to pass. But I don't really deserve to. Can probably count on one hand the number of hours I've spent working with this course. If it had been better I'd probably would have spent more time on it, but it was a crappy course.
Was planning to see Ed Harcourt tonight. But I just woke up, and I feel like shit. So I think maybe not. But he is good.. Maybe. I still have about one hour to change my mind..
Read some rumors that Spacey might be portraying Lex Luthor in the new superman movie. That would be cool. I've been wanting to see him as the bad guy again. Not a big fan of the superhero movies though. Well, they can be fun. Enjoyed the first batman and the first spiderman. But not the biggest fan of the X-Men movies.. And I guess the superman movie would be more like them, since it's Bryan Singer..
Wonder when this Bobby Darin movie is coming out here. Probably not until mid next year sometime... Why do they have to wait so long. This movie Ray isn't being shown until late january.. But that's not that bad really. I think when I was younger it took way longer before US movies opened here. But I could be wrong. I woudn't trust my memory. I tried some of these excersises you'll find in these how to improve your memory books.. But it didn't help.. Not that I made a big effort.. Late dinner... Food...

Need sleep

Stayed up until about four this morning to finnish the fucking power point presentation.. Why can't I learn to do just one thing at the time. I would finnish things so much faster. It's not like I had to write much. I'm so stupid. Fell asleep about the time the sun was comming up. Staggered down to school at 8 this morning. We put it all together, and then had a small panick attack. Because of the snow - the subway broke down. So we were missing half of our group. Every fucking year - first snowfall - complete chaos...
Luckily there was one group ahead of us.. So we sat down and listened to their presentation, and waited for the rest of our group. After about 30 minutes the others showed up, but the other group weren't even half way through what is suppose to be a 30min presentation... They talked soooooo slow. And it just went on and on and on... When it finally was our turn... "It looks as though we don't have time for the other group. I hope it is ok if you do it next week."
Think of all the sleep I could have had...Completly ruined my day. Got my hands on Long Days Journey Into the Night. So I've been watching that.. But I had a bit of trouble keeping my eyes open. Not that it is boring. It's very good- although it's obvious that it's a taped theatre performance. I think it's taped on the theatre set. The camera doesn't move all that much, and the acting is very 'dramatic'.. But the performance are so good. But anyway. I am watching this thing and then suddenly I had no idea what they were talking about. Found out I had been sleeping for some 10 minutes. Happened a lot.. I should have just turned off, and slept a bit. But no - that would have been to smart a thing to do.
So now, after been half a sleep all day, and it's beginning to get late enough for me to go to bed again - I'm beginning to wake up..

Also got my copy of ElDorado Motorhome. Weird little filmthing. Had a bit of a Lynch feel about it.

I have to make two Power Point presentations for tomorrow, so naturally I've been rewatching The Big Kahuna. And now I'm on here... Anyway.... I really like it now. When I first saw it I just heard God, lubricants, blablablabla. I guess maybe cause I was expecting a silly comedy, I didn't really pay that much attention. But now I thought it was quite an interesting character study. Maybe cause I'm desperatly trying to avoid writing about zooplankton and pollution. Which I really have to do now. Only 17 hours until I have to present it.. I hate giving talks about something I don't really know much about. My voice gets all shaky and I talk really really fast.. So my 15minute talk will probably last about 5...

I've been looking so long at these pictures of you
That I almost believe that they're real
I've been living so long with my pictures of you
That I almost believe that the pictures are
All I can feel

Pictures of you by the Cure is a really beautiful song. Considering the crappy mood I've been in lately - I really have to stop listening to all that 'music that make you want to kill yourself'. I need happy happy music.. Happiness by Grant Lee Buffalo is one of my all time favourite songs - but it's not very happy..
That'll bring you happiness happiness
Is hard to come by I confess
I'm bad at this thing happiness
If you find it share it with the rest of us

When I make my lame attempts to go running on the treadmill - I listen to old big band music. Maybe that's why I don't last that long.. but maybe I should listen to more of that kind of music...Fun, uplifting, happy stuff.. Fuck - panic attack - have to write the thing now.. Arrgh!

From http://www.straightdope.com/
"For further insight, we turn to Hatcher's Notebook (1962) by Major General Julian S. Hatcher, a U.S. Army ordnance expert. Hatcher described military tests with, among other things, a .30 caliber bullet weighing .021 pounds. Using a special rig, the testers shot the bullet straight into the air. It came down bottom (not point) first at what was later computed to be about 300 feet per second. "With the [.021 pound] bullet, this corresponds to an energy of 30 foot pounds," Hatcher wrote. "Previously, the army had decided that on the average an energy of 60 foot pounds is required to produce a disabling wound. Thus, service bullets returning from extreme heights cannot be considered lethal by this standard."
If 30 foot pounds doesn't mean much to you, the bullet made a mark about one-sixteenth of an inch deep in a soft pine board. About what you'd get giving it a good whack with a hammer. Note that we're talking about bullets shot straight up here. If the bullet is fired more or less horizontally, it may not lose much speed before returning to earth and could easily kill someone."

From another site.
"the terminal velocity of a bullet could be 300 or 400 feet per second. This could be about 300 miles per hour..
It's going about three times as fast as a professionally hit tennis serve"

Skipped going to the lab today. Finding myself watching CNN's coverage of the burial of Yasser Arafat. Strange to be watching that on tv.. But anyway. When they are shooting their guns in the air. Isn't that a bit dangerous. I mean - the bullets have to fall down at some point. Or maybe it's blanks... I don't know much about guns. They probably wouldn't do it if it was dangerous. Maybe it's just like being hit with pebbles or something. Well, probably not. Bullets being fired straight up much reach quite a bit of height before they fall down.. And if you shoot more horisontally, then they don't loose that much speed do they?..

Why am I so sleepy

I just can't seem to keep my eyes open anymore. I just want to sleep and sleep and sleep.
Why is that - I mean I eat vitamins, fruit, veggies, I excersise.. and sleep... Ok, so it's rainy and dark, but still.. Maybe I need light therapy.
I was going to meet someone at 9 this morning. Slept through that. 3 alarm clocks and a radio making alot of noise right by my head. Nothing. The only thing I remember is that I heard on the radio that Arafat had died. It's strange when people like that die. Sort of larger than life characters. I just can't imagine them dying.. Not that I can imagine anyone dying. The whole idea of not excisting is a bit difficult to grasp.. Too tired to think about life and death today. Although I felt an itch to go and discuss the origin of life with the people from Jehovah's Witnesses. They seemed lonley. Have been sitting out in the freezing cold by their stand at the uni for days now. I do enjoy reading their little books and pamphlets, but discussing with them is impossible. Can just as well go and bang your head against a brick wall. But I guess they think the same about us (us - meaning my friends and I). Or probably not. That's what they do isn't it. 'Make deciples of people of all nations'
Anyway, I wonder what will happen in Palestine now. I am worried about my friends down there. I really should try to get in touch with them again. But it's been so long now. I hope they still are doing ok.

On a lighter note - Watched Darrow today. Almost managed to get through all the Spacey movies. Had a hard time keeping my eyes open though. But it wasn't a bad movie. Spacey was good as always and it was nice to see Chris Cooper in it. But I felt like they kind of rushed through it. Maybe a few to many court cases, and a lot of loose ends. But it's an interesting story, and well worth a look.

Terrible boring weekend. Was going to go see all the LotR movies. They were showing all three during one night. But of course, no tickets left... My other big plan was - this weekend I was going to get up to date with all my schoolwork. Study for my exam, write my rapports and organize my labwork.. Once again - failed completely.
Hmmm.. let's see - what did I do.. Well, I finally saw North by Northwestern. Cary Grants 'concentrating while drunkdriving' face is hilarious.. And I finally won the bidding on Grant Lee Buffalos - ElDorado Motorhome. If that one gets lost in the mail I'm going to be very upset. I kinda learnt how to play 'Everlong' on the guitar. A really really bad version of it... And I did my laundry...Oh and we also got an apartment! Or one floor of a house really. Byebye tiny 12m2 room.

Wow. Good thing I didn't actually put money on Kerry. I seriously didn't believe that Bush would be re-elected.
Maybe we just have gotten the wrong idea about him over here. Obviously there has to be something about him..
Well, I can kind of understand it - he certainly got a way with words...

"They misunderestimated me." Bentonville, Ark., Nov. 6, 2000
"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." Washington, D.C., Aug. 5, 2004
"Karyn is with us. A West Texas girl, just like me." May 27, 2004
"More Muslims have died at the hands of killers than—I say more Muslims—a lot of Muslims have died—I don't know the exact count—at Istanbul. Look at these different places around the world where there's been tremendous death and destruction because killers kill." Washington, D.C., Jan. 29, 2004
"And so, in my State of the—my State of the Union—or state—my speech to the nation, whatever you want to call it, speech to the nation—I asked Americans to give 4,000 years—4,000 hours over the next—the rest of your life—of service to America. That's what I asked—4,000 hours." Bridgeport, Conn., April 9, 2002
"I think war is a dangerous place." Washington, D.C., May 7, 2003
"We spent a lot of time talking about Africa, as we should. Africa is a nation that suffers from incredible disease." Gothenburg, Sweden, June 14, 2001
"Our nation must come together to unite."
Tampa, Fla., June 4, 2001

I know it's getting a bit old. But I still find it funny - well, no - scary actually..
On a more positive note. I finally found Rilo Kileys "More Adventurous" in the record store. It's not the easiest thing to get their albums here in Norway. Don't know why I didn't just buy it on Amazon or something earlier. It's brilliant.

Tuesday, November 02, 2004

Suddenly my TV was willing to show my Region 1 DVDs and NTSC videos. All I did was turn on a knob. Now, why haven't I done that before? Finally I can watch my Say Anything DVD. I love Lloyd Dobler.
"I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that. "

I wonder who's going to win the election today (or tomorrow for me)? My money is on Kerry. I'm suprisingly anxious about it. Not that I normally wouldn't care. But I certainly care more about this one than I have any other non-norwegian elections. Maybe because of Bush's incompetence, but probably much because of all the media coverage it has gotten in the norwegian papers. Even the.. what's it called - primary elections.. I think.. Whatever it is, it's been a bit much.. I know it's important, but we should maybe worry more about our own election which is next year. Ready for a change here too. I wonder if it will be as crazy as the American one. Or it won't be. But you can clearly see there has been a big change in the debates and such in the last years. And now they're going to allow political commercials on tv. How annoying is that going to be.

Got a couple of free tickets to see The Door in the Floor. Not ready for that kind of a movie today. Way too much symbolism for my little brain. I was ready for some nice brainless entertainment. I did like it though, but I think maybe I'll have to see it again to fully appreciate it.
Also got to play with a digital camera at school today. Nikon Coolpix 990. Definetly what I want for christmas. Maybe not that one - I want one which I can get an underwater housing to.
